Enamel is the only structure in a tooth that is naturally white in color. Even in its most natural state, it is just an off-white color. The underlying core structure of the tooth is dentin, which is softer and yellower than enamel. As enamel thins, more of the dentin shows through, causing the teeth to appear yellow. There are several causes of thinning enamel, all of which can be prevented. You have to take preventive measures against the cause itself. Acidic pH substances are enamel’s kryptonite. They slowly dissolve the enamel, leaving it thinner, weaker, and more translucent. To prevent this, avoid acidic drinks like sodas, sparkling water, fruit juices, beer, and wine. See your doctor to treat any problems with acid reflux and dry mouth (your saliva is a base and counteracts damage from acids).
Brushing your teeth twice a day is one of the most effective practices for removing plaque and bacteria from the teeth and keeping them clean. Yet, brushing is only effective if people use the proper technique. You should brush by making small circular motions. Take care to brush every tooth’s top, front, and back. Avoid the typical sawing back-and-forth motions most people engage in while brushing. Brushing aggressively or using a hard-bristled toothbrush can damage the tooth enamel and gums. Using a toothbrush with soft bristles is best recommended, and your toothbrushes should be changed every three months or when they start looking worn out.

To help you get a smile to be proud of for World Oral Health Day, chief executive of the Oral Health Foundation, Dr Nigel Carter, has compiled his list of top tips for better oral health. Brushing your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste: Brushing your teeth for two minutes last thing at night and at one other time during the day with a fluoride toothpaste is the most important step you can take for a healthy smile. This will keep your mouth clean and free from plaque and can help prevent tooth decay. Dr Nigel Carter says: Twice daily toothbrushing is the cornerstone to having good oral health because it removes plaque. If plaque is not removed and is allowed to build up, it can cause conditions like tooth decay and gum disease. Brushing only once a day can increase the chances of developing tooth decay by up to a third, so setting aside time for the second brush is really important.
